Our Story

Rooted in the community we serve, ready for whatever comes next

Manzanola Rural Fire Protection District was formed in 1971 by a community that understood a fundamental truth: in the vast stretches of the San Luis Valley, help doesn't arrive on its own — it has to be organized, funded, and staffed by the people who live here.

What began as a small volunteer crew operating from a single station has grown into a full-service fire and emergency medical district covering more than 300 square miles. Our team includes career firefighters, certified EMTs and paramedics, and dozens of trained volunteers who answer calls from ranches, farms, homes, and highways across our district.

We are governed by an elected board of directors and funded through property taxes and state aid. Every dollar is accounted for, every call answered, and every resident protected — because this is our home too.
